Spatial structure includes spatial elements such as physical expansion, communicational network, and Demographic and economic changes. All these aspects, in an interwoven and coordinated connection with each other, reach developmental goals; however, spatial structure is mostly effected by Demographic and activity-related aspects the negligence of which would lead to lack of integrity in the spatial structure. The purpose of this article was to analyze the system of population distribution, and the spatial distribution of activity, and finally to study the spatial structure of these two variables in relation to each other. The research methodology adopted was quantitative, with a descriptive-analytic approach. The data include Demographic and activity-related data from rural districts of West Azerbaijan during the years 1996 - 2011, obtained from the Statistical Center of Iran. In order to analyze the Demographic data, urban rank-size, kernel density, and spatial correlation methods were used; and to analyze activity data, Moran’s General-Local method was used. Finally, to understand the relationship between these two variables, their correlation was analyzed. The findings indicate that the spatial structure of West Azerbaijan province was single-bordered in 1996, but the process of spatial distribution of Demographic and activity, due to a high correlation between these two variables, indicates a kind of de-centralization and a movement towards a clustered spatial pattern in the 15-year-long period. Such a process has led to a change in the spatial structure of West Azerbaijan, and requires a proper orientation in future urban and regional development programs.
